From Rolling Stone's THE SMOKING SECTION:

The Strokes Are Back In Action!
March 26, 2009 12:48 PM
For the first time in ages, the Strokes are back in New York, hard at work on album number four in their midtown studio. "We have three songs," Julian Casablancas tells the S.S., three weeks into the sessions. "I would say it's going great. We have a lot of work to do, though."

It's been more than three years since First Impressions of Earth, and what's helping the process is good vibes and honesty. "It feels like we're new," says Casablancas. "We didn't used to be honest — there would always be minifeuds over stupid shit. Now, if Nick [Valensi] and Fab [Moretti] or anyone are saying they like it fast or slow, we'll talk about it, as opposed to saying, 'Well, I never liked you sister.'"

Casablancas says that they've resisted jamming on old tunes; instead they're forging ahead. "Some of the new stuff has a Seventies vibe, like Thin Lizzy or Elvis Costello," he says. "But then some of it is bizarre music from the future that we're trying to tone down to sound catchy. So we're trapped between the future and the Seventies."*

*Uhhhhhhh, "trapped between the future and the 70's?" Are Julian, Niko and Fab trapped in the Dharma Initiative with Sawyer, and Nick and Albert trapped in the future with Locke? Because that would be a fucking awesome album.

Ivan Garikow project

Beehive Blonde, by Ivan Garikow
Check out this video. I'm working on a project about the recently discovered Russian artist, Ivan Garikow. More info at this website.
I like the above painting because it's a little bit more Pop than Garikow's other work. We see a girl with the trendy, bleached-blonde hairstyle of the time with black eyeliner. Now all she needs are chandelier earrings, and she'd be hanging out at The Factory................

it makes me sick

Live! Tonight! Sold Out!: everyone should watch it.

one week of danger

The Virgins' new video for "One Week of Danger" is out. You can watch it on their myspace or on the director Kai Regan's blog, where you can read more about it.

Fun times in the era of MTA fare hikes.

je suis je suis hippie

By now you probably know that Jack White has a new "side project" called The Dead Weather.  You can listen to two tracks on their site: "Hang You From the Heavens" and "Are Friends Electric?" I predict success for Jack's new venture. He's joined by Alison Mosshart of The Kills, Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age, and "Little" Jack Lawrence from the Raconteurs. The video of their photo booth antics on the site, if a bit postured, fits the music quite nicely. But a new Jack supergroup begs the question, When will the White Stripes return? C'est la vie.

New band to check out: Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers. They are from Brooklyn and will play the Mercury Lounge on March 28. I like this a lot.

Congrats to my hero, Roger Federer. All the best, we love you!

she's gonna have my baby

I've always kind of talked down Kings of Leon because when I saw them open for the Strokes in 2003, their Southern brand of garage rock left me uninspired. Today they're everywhere; they even won a Grammy in 2009, which the Strokes have yet to do... Thank you, crazy academy.

Over the weekend I went to Urban w/ Kaitlyn and Gabrielle, and while pulling clothes off racks, I recognized KOL on the overhead speakers. The song "Knocked Up" floored me with its sexiness and fatalism and wistfulness all in one. The next day I bought the album Because of the Times (2007) and it reminds me of 90's rock a little bit; I hear 3eb, Smashing Pumpkins atmospheric guitars, Filter, and even a little bit of Soundgarden. Anyway the verdict is still out, but I may cut KOL some slack next time I'm asked for my opinion.

it's not over not over not over not over yet

Last night Rebecca and I went to Nate Lowman's opening at Maccarone. It's a meditation on smiley faces and their many meanings, contexts, and manifestations. Of course, being Ms. Easy Rider, I loved the show because it touches on the death of the individual, the death of the American dream and perversion of pop culture, the value of junk, and the making of your own mark (among other things). While the exhibition doesn't showcase the mastery of paint, the cutting yet playful approach to modern Americana stood out for me, especially in the smiley face painting above. As a kid I collected smiley face jewelry and named each one some version of "Sam." I also painted and collaged all the walls in my bedroom and closet to my parents' dismay. So I mostly dig it because it hits so close to home, and we literally couldn't stop looking.
